If you don't have central air in your home, window air conditioners are an ideal option. A window air conditioner often takes more abuse than many people realize and unfortunately, they may break down when you least expect it. The good news is there are typically early signs that there may be a problem, but without quick servicing, the air conditioner may stop working altogether. Here are a few signs that it's time for air conditioner service and maintenance on your window air conditioner.

Rattling Noise

Most window air conditioners make some type of noise when they are running. However, there's a couple of different reasons why you may suddenly notice a rattling noise that has gotten louder or even gets extremely loud and then quieter.  Some of the most common causes for loud rattling in a window air conditioner may include:

  • A bent or broken fan blade
  • The air conditioner isn't braced properly in the window frame
  • The motor needs lubricated
  • A foreign object is caught in the fan

The motor is enclosed in a housing unit, so attempting to repair a window air conditioner can be hazardous. The best solution is to contact an air conditioner service technician as soon as you become aware of the problem.

Ice on the Coils

Although the air conditioner is meant to blow ice cold air, it doesn't mean there should be ice on the air conditioner. The most common cause for ice on a window air conditioner is a dirty filter, so simply cleaning the filter may eliminate the ice buildup on the coils. However, if the ice continues to form after cleaning the filter, the problem may be something else, such as an issue with the thermostat or  low refrigerant. You should contact an air conditioner service technician for anything other than cleaning the filter, especially if there is a problem with the refrigerant.

Doesn't Turn On

In many situations, there is generally a simple reason for a window air conditioner to not turn on. The first step is to make sure there is power going to the unit, so ensure it's plugged in and that the circuit breaker has flipped. If neither of these are the problem, unplug the air conditioner and contact a service technician to inspect the unit. If the air conditioner is old, it may need to be replaced, but if the problem is something internal, such as an issue with the compressor, the technician may be able to repair it and help you avoid the cost of replacement.

Window air conditioners are partially inside the room and partially outside, so they are exposed to the environment and all of the debris outside. In order to maintain your window air conditioner, it's important that you routinely clean it by removing all dust and debris, especially on the section that is outside. If you notice any changes in the way the air conditioner is working or if it is making unusual sounds, it's best to contact an air conditioner service technician as soon as possible.
